Two Fishing Boats and the Sea
Composition 1 and Composition 2
For the first composition I took 6 1”x1” samples from the Japanese block print Two Fishing Boats at Sea by Katsushika Hokusai and used layers, blending options, filters, transformations, adjustments, and effects to manipulate each sample. I then took those samples and arranged them in a 8x13 cell grid on a horizontal 11x17. I took inspiration from the origins of the block print, and the environment in the piece, and tried to evoke the form of Koi fish in this composition. For the second composition, I hand traced 6 1”x1” samples from the same block print and arranged them in an 8x13 cell grid on a horizontal 11x17. The concept for this composition was radial symmetry in the interpretive shape of an eye.
