In my fifth and final year at IIT I took a class called Digital Fabrication which focused on learning how to use the CNC Machine along with RhinoCAM, the software used to execute the commands on the machine. In preparation to be able to create the final project I learned engraving, halftone pattern drilling, 3-dimensional surface planing, friction fit joint creation, and half-scale furniture machining. After the midterm assignment of creating a piece of half-scale furniture my class broke into groups of 3-4 people to design pavilion ideas for large scale machining. We iterated for 3 weeks before voting on a design, creating a half-scale mockup, and then finally creating a full-scale version out of mdf. The video below shows our iterations of pavilion concepts, the half-scale mockup of the selected design, and assembly of the finished pieces in our architecture building Crown Hall along with a voiceover by Tyler Zediker explains his design concept.
Below are some of my projects where I learned the CNC skills needed to execute the final project, the Cobra Pavilion.
